The MREAC sub-committee completed an ARMA (Air Resource Management Area) Miramichi - Airshed Management Plan in the spring of 1998. It was subsequently accepted by the "client", the Provincial Minister of the Environment. A remnant of this sub-committee remains intact to advance the recommendations of this ARMA report, and especially those that better apply to an ENGO rather than government. MREAC will continue to include Air Quality and Climate Change initiatives to promote improved environmental quality, improve air quality for human health, and reduce green house gas emissions. This program will be advanced by:
- Promoting Miramichi City's involvement in the FCM 20% club.
- Liaison with NBDOE as the community based body of stakeholders interested in addressing and advising on local air issues of point and mobile source discharges on the Miramichi.
- Reviewing upcoming CoA's issued to industry within the Miramichi airshed.
- Continue to operate its Air Watch Program in association with River Watch.
- Partner with EC and NBDOE to become a community resource of information on Ground Level Ozone levels and other air quality and climate change issues.
- Cooperate with NBLung, EC, and NBDOE to promote improved auto emissions and wood burning technology on the Miramichi.
- Promote greater awareness of the proper application of pesticides among the public in the Miramichi airshed.
- Promote climate change awareness, and incorporate adaptation strategies within Miramichi communities.
