MREAC monitors and promotes improvements in waste stream management in these four different sectors of waste stream generation.
Industrial Waste: MREAC works closely with the local industries in their move toward improved management of discharges to meet environmental standards. Within this partnership, MREAC continues a measure of independent monitoring downstream or downwind of industrial sites. Many local industries provide support to this program. Funding and in-kind support has been provided by NBDOE, Weyerhaeuser, Noranda, UPM-Kymmene and ACAP.
Municipal Waste: MREAC works, and will continue to work directly with the local municipalities towards improving the quality of discharges and reduction of municipal waste streams. MREAC is most closely partnered with the City of Miramichi as the largest contributor of municipal discharges. This partnership continues to be very positive. Funding and in-kind support is anticipated through NBDOE, First Nation Communities, the City of Miramichi, other watershed municipalities and ACAP.
Rural Waste: In cooperation with NBDOE, NBDNR&E and NBDH&W, MREAC will continue to pursue mechanisms that which will promote better maintenance of on-site sewage treatment systems and other waste streams in the rural environment. Also, MREAC will continue a program of promoting improved waste-water management in communities without sewage collection and treatment. MREAC also promotes the responsible management of construction and debris waste and is involved in a provincial derelict vehicle program. Funding and support is anticipated through NBDOE, NBH&W and ACAP.
Agricultural Waste Water: MREAC has experience in developing environmental farm plans and continues to have an interest in addressing agricultural waste stream issues. Funding and support is expected through ACAP, NBDFAA, the farming community, and Ducks Unlimited.
